HYDERABAD: Recent floods that wreaked havoc appear to have seriously damaged TRS’s prospects for victory in the GHMC elections.
The BJP won most of the GHMC districts in the flood-affected areas in the LB Nagar, Uppal, Rajendranagar, Musheerabad, Secunderabad and Himayatnagar Assembly segments.
The Opposition had targeted the ruling party during the election campaign for its alleged inability to handle the flood situation and not provide timely relief to the victims. They also took aim at TRS for not extending the 10,000 rupee assistance to all families affected by the flood and charged that TRS companies had looted during the distribution of financial aid.
The BJP, which came second in GHMC’s results on Friday, had promised assistance of Rs 25,000 to each affected family if it came to power. TRS’s counterargument against the BJP guarantee apparently had no impact on voters in the flood-affected areas and joined the BJP and gave it a large chunk of divisions.
Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s guarantee to extend the 10,000 rupees to the remaining families after the GHMC elections does not appear to have worked either. During the flood, dozens of colonies were flooded in areas such as Champapet, Uppal, Bandlaguda, Meerpet, Dilsukhnagar, LB Nagar, Malkajgiri and Saroornagar.
Due to heavy rains with Hussainsagar reaching full tank level (FTL), excess water flooded Gandhinagar, Ashoknagar, Padma Colony, Nagamaiah Kunta, Nallakunta, Vidyanagar, Domalguda, Arundathinagar, Ambedkarnagar, Aravindanagar, Shivanandanagar.
Uppal voters defeated Uppal’s MLA wife Subhash Reddy and those in the Rajendranagar segment elected BJP in three of the five segment districts.
Divisions in flood-affected areas such as Kavadiguda, Adikmet, Nallakunta, Moosarambagh, Musheerabad, Gandhinagar Monda Market Champapet, Chaitanyapuri and Bagh Amberpet were pocketed by the BJP.
In the Secunderabad GHMC circle of 27 divisions, BJP won 14 seats, in the LB Nagar circle they got 15 seats out of 23, in Khairatabad nine seats out of 27 while in the Charminar circle it won seven out of 36 seats.
