36 UK MPs write to UK Foreign Secretary on Indian farmers’ turmoil


NEW DELHI: After Canada, 36 UK MPs led by the Labor Party have written to British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, asking him to raise the issue of the ongoing farmers’ protest with New Delhi.
In a letter to the UK Foreign Secretary, Labor Party MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi stated: “The introduction of these new laws by the Indian government (Center), despite the coronavirus, has triggered widespread protests by farmers. throughout the country for not protecting farmers from exploitation and ensuring fair prices for their products. ”
“This is an issue of particular concern to Sikhs in the UK and those linked to Punjab, although it also has a strong impact on other Indian states. Many British Sikhs and Punjabis have raised this issue with their MPs as they see each other directly affected by family members and ancestral lands in Punjab. Approximately three-quarters of the state’s 30 million people are engaged in agriculture. Therefore, these new laws present the Punjabis with a big problem, and some describe it as a “death sentence,” he added in the letter raising the problem of farmers who have been protesting against the three new agricultural laws in India.
Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, Labor MP at Farmer’s protest, tweeted: “Farmers in Punjab and across India are peacefully protesting # FarmersBill2020. After our October meeting, more discussions and given a strong sense of injustice felt by many voters, a cross-party letter from British MPs has been sent to the Foreign Office. ”

Jack Harris, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, said in his tweet: “Violence against farmers in India is alarming. Peaceful protests embody the resilient spirit of Punjabi farmers. In Gurpurab, I join Sikhs from across Canada to ask Justin Trudeau to condemn the violent crackdown on protests by the Indian government “.
Andrea Horwath, Ontario’s opposition leader, said in a tweet: “#IStandWithFarmers in India who are protesting peacefully, as well as their loved ones here in Ontario, who are watching with horror the violent repression. Everyone deserves to be able to exercise their rights. without fear of state-sanctioned violence. ”
Despite India’s warning to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about his previous comments on farmers’ protests, the prime minister has once again commented that he will “always defend the right to peaceful protests.”
At a press conference after the Foreign Ministry issued an address to the High Commissioner of Canada, Trudeau said: “Canada will always defend the right to peaceful protests anywhere in the world.”
Meanwhile, the Sikh Council UK has demanded that political leaders support the Canadian prime minister. “Political leaders must stand alongside @JustinTrudeau in opposing human rights violations by the Indian authorities and not giving in to harassment,” the Sikh Council UK said in a tweet.
Farmers protest against the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020, the Farmers’ Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) on Price Guarantee and the Agricultural Services Act of 2020 and the Essential Products Act (Amendment ) of 2020.
