'Zero tolerance for corruption': BJP suspends councilman arrested by CBI for bribery

Manoj Mehlawat, a councilor for Vasant Kunj, was arrested in connection with a 10 lakh rupee bribe

New Delhi:

Delhi BJP Chairman Adesh Gupta on Friday suspended a city councilor, who was arrested by the CBI, from the party’s main membership.

Delhi BJP spokesman Praveen Shankar Kapoor said Councilor Manoj Mahalawat was suspended from the party’s main membership by Gupta immediately after the preliminary investigation report arrived.

“The party has zero tolerance for corruption,” he said.

Manoj Mehlawat, a Vasant Kunj councilor under the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), was arrested in connection with a 10 lakh rupee bribery case, authorities said on Friday.

Apparently he had demanded a bribe to allow the construction of a house without any hindrance, they said.

The detained councilor was brought before a special court that sent him to judicial custody. The agency caught him red-handed, authorities said.
