Amid social media outrage over SBI’s Yono (You Only Need One) app, which faces frequent outages, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said today that the central bank is reviewing the recent disruption of the SBI. “Banks and financial institutions need to invest more in their IT system,” said the RBI chief.
“We are constantly committed to managing financial institutions where there is a need to improve their IT systems,” added the head of RBI.
Amid social media outrage over the app’s malfunction, SBI had assured customers that they were fixing the app. “We ask our esteemed customers to bear with us as we work to restore the YONO SBI application to provide an uninterrupted banking experience,” SBI said in a tweet.
Many SBI clients took to social media to complain about technical glitches that led to transaction failures.
“@TheOfficialSBI server is down since morning … Worst services: I want to close my sbi account. Please help me, what is the procedure to close sbi account online?” A customer tweeted.
Another user said: “… what good is being in a digital world if I have to wait in a retail store and be embarrassed because SBI servers are down …”
Last month too, SBI clients faced technical problems. “We apologize for the inconvenience. There are intermittent connectivity issues with our servers. Please bear with us as our team is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, we suggest you use our other digital channels.”
The central bank has cracked down on HDFC Bank for frequent outages to its mobile banking and internet. RBI has asked the private lender to temporarily halt all launches of its digital business generation activities under the “Digital 2.0” program, including recruiting new credit card customers.
