Punjab CM meets with Interior Minister Amit Shah on farmer unrest, government expects positive outcome in talks today


Punjab Prime Minister Captain Amarinder Singh arrived on Thursday to meet with Union Interior Minister Amit Shah on ongoing farmer protests on the outskirts of the national capital against the three controversial agricultural laws passed. by the Center in September.

The meeting between Shah and Singh comes on a day when the fourth round of talks between the government and protesting farmers is scheduled. The third round of talks, which took place on Tuesday, ended in a stalemate, when farmers’ representatives rejected the government’s proposal to form a panel to discuss the three laws.

Meanwhile, the Union’s agriculture minister, Narendra Singh Tomar, said he expects a positive outcome from talks with farmers: “The government is constantly discussing issues with farmers. Today is the fourth round of talks and I hope for a positive outcome, ”Tomar said after meeting with Interior Minister Shah.

The Center is doing all it can to end the protest against the recently enacted farm laws, which are opposed by peasant leaders. Just hours before talks with protesting farmers, Som Prakash, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, declared on Thursday that farmers are coming to dialogue because there is hope for a solution that is acceptable to both the government and farmers. and reiterated that the Center is clear that the Minimum Support Price (MSP) will remain and is willing to give it in writing as well.

Of the three ministers who held hour-long discussions with farmers, Prakash hails from Punjab and today he will engage with farmers along with Agriculture Minister Tomar and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

The agricultural unions, which are leading the protests, said 40 leaders are present in Vigyan Bhawan to dialogue with the government.

“We are hopeful that the talks will be productive. If our demands are not met, farmers will participate in the Republic Day parade in Delhi, ”said farmer leader Rakesh Tikat.

Farmers protest against the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020, the Farmers’ Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) on Price Guarantee and the Agricultural Services Act of 2020 and the Essential Products Act (Amendment ) of 2020.
