Egyptian police arrested a fashion photographer for disrespecting him after he took pictures of a model in a revealing antique outfit at the Pyramid of Djoser, which is located on the outskirts of Cairo. Some reports claimed that the fashion model, Salma al-Shimi, was also arrested shortly after the shooting at the Saqqara necropolis.
“A photographer has been arrested after a private session with the model and dancer Salma al-Shimi in the archaeological zone. His case had been referred to the courts, “Guardian reported, citing security sources.
Shimi had posted photos and also a video of the shoot on Instagram a few days ago. Shimi has thousands of followers on Instagram.
Shortly thereafter, several social media users claimed that Shimi had been arrested for disrespecting the wearing of outfits that do not conform to Egypt’s ancient heritage.
Shimi has also been accused of violating the rules set by Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities for photo shoots.
Expressing disbelief at the photoshoot, netizens asked, “Is there really a ban on taking pictures in archaeological sites, even pictures that are not indecent but completely normal?”
It was later reported that the images were removed from the model’s Instagram account, but the images were still present on Shimi’s Instagram account.
It should be noted that several social media influencers were jailed in Egypt for sharing content that the court found offensive.
