Dharampal Gulati, the owner of MDH Masala, passed away Thursday morning at the age of 98. Gulati was reportedly in treatment at a Delhi hospital for the past three weeks. He went into cardiac arrest Thursday morning and took his last breath at 5.30am.
Affectionately called ‘dalaji’ and ‘Mahashayji’, Gulati was born in 1923 in Sialkot, Pakistan. Dropped out of school, he joined his father’s spice business in the early days.

After the 1947 partition, Gulati moved to India and stayed in a refugee camp in Amritsar, India TV reported. Then he moved to Delhi and opened a store in Delhi’s Karol Bagh. Gulati officially established the company in 1959. Not only did the business flourish in India alone, Gulati also became a distributor and exporter. His company exports Indian spices to various parts of the world including the UK, Europe, the UAE, Canada, etc.
He was honored with the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian award, in 2019.
