A mysterious-looking metal monolith appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the barren Utah desert last week and created a stir around the world.
The mysterious object was found by officers from the Utah Department of Public Safety, who were flying by helicopter to help the Division of Wildlife Resources count the bighorn sheep in southeastern Utah.
Shortly after the discovery, videos and images of the monolith circulated widely on social media. Unsurprisingly, netizens came up with various theories about how he appeared in the middle of the desert.
Now, the mystery of the monolith has become more intriguing after an identical metal monolith appeared on a hillside in Romania. He was seen just a few meters from a historic fortress.
The new metal monolith was reportedly found on Batca Doamnei Hill in the town of Piatra Neamt on November 26. An official investigation was launched and officials said they do not know who the monolith belongs to.
The structure was placed exactly as it was in Utah, near the Petrodava Dacian Fortress
The Petrodava Dacian Fortress is one of the oldest historical monuments in Romania, and is believed to have been destroyed by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. Its ruins are still a great draw for locals and tourists.
As for the one found in Utah, it now appears to be missing, according to the state Bureau of Land Management.
“We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, known as the ‘monolith,’ has been removed from public lands by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) by an unknown party,” the office said in a statement.
“The BLM did not remove the structure that is considered private property. We do not investigate crimes involving private property that are handled by the local sheriff’s office,” they added.
