Chennai:
Tamil Nadu has extended general coronavirus-related restrictions until December 31 with further relaxations, including for the reopening of universities and popular tourist spots, some of which have been closed since March.
At undergraduate universities, in-person learning can be resumed starting December 7 with standard operating procedures. The relaxation has only been extended to seniors in arts, science, engineering, agriculture, and technical courses.
However, in medical and related universities, all undergraduate and graduate classes will resume from December 7, said a notice issued by the Tamil Nadu government.
Classes for undergraduate first-year students in medical schools will begin on December 1, with shelter facilities, the notification added.
Starting on December 14, Tamil Nadu’s famous Marina Beach will be among the resorts reopening for the first time since the national closure in March this year.
With the permission of the collector or the police, indoor gatherings – political, social, religious or entertaining – with a 50 percent capacity or a maximum of 200 people have also been allowed.
So far, Tamil Nadu has the fourth highest number of coronavirus infections in India with 7.8 lakh of cases and around 11,700 deaths, with the highest infections recorded in and around the capital Chennai.
The state recorded 1,459 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours with 9 deaths related to the disease.
The Chief Minister’s statement said that “the positivity rate in the state has dropped below 6.5% as a result of the good deed of the state.”
Amid the rise of Covid in certain parts of the country, especially in the colder northern states, the central government had recently published a new set of lockdown rules.
States were allowed to impose localized restrictions such as nighttime curfews to contain the spread of COVID-19, but said any restrictions on movement outside of containment zones would have to be approved by the Center.
India has more than 94 lakh of coronavirus cases with 1,37,139 deaths.
