Iran Blames Israel and Exiled Group, Says Nuclear Scientist Killed in ‘New and Complex’ Operation

A senior Iranian official said Monday that nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed in a new type of “complex operation”, blaming arch-enemy Israel and an exiled opposition group.

The “operation was very complex, it used electronic equipment and no one was present at the scene,” the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, told state television.

The Mujahideen of the Iranian People (MEK) were “certainly” involved, along with “the Zionist regime and Mossad,” he added, referring to Israel’s external security agency.

“The enemy used a completely new, professional and specialized method and achieved its objective,” he added, without elaborating on the weapons involved.

Shamkhani’s comments came in video interviews broadcast on state television and the Fars news agency.

Without citing sources, Fars herself claimed that the attack had been carried out with the help of “a remote-controlled automatic machine gun” mounted on a van.

Shamkhani’s comments came in video interviews broadcast on state television and the Fars news agency.

Without citing sources, Fars herself claimed that the attack had been carried out with the help of “a remote-controlled automatic machine gun” mounted on a van.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday accused Israel of acting as a “mercenary” of the United States in carrying out the assassination.

Scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh died of his injuries on Friday in a hospital, according to Iran’s Defense Ministry, which in a statement said the assailants attacked his car and participated in a shootout with his bodyguards outside the capital.

Iran’s enemies had targeted Fakhrizadeh as a target “for twenty years,” and an attack was anticipated at some point, Shamkhani said.

“The security forces had predicted the possibility of an attack against him, even predicting the possible location of the incident,” he said at the scientist’s funeral in Tehran.

But given the “frequency of (such) news in these twenty years, unfortunately this time the required seriousness was not applied,” he added.

According to Iran’s defense minister Amir Hatami, Fakhrizadeh was one of his deputies and headed the ministry’s Defense and Research and Innovation Organization, which focuses on the field of “nuclear defense.”
