Another storm is expected to hit Tamil Nadu less than a week after Cyclone Nivar hit the southern state, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. The meteorological department said the cyclone, which will cross the coast of Sri Lanka on December 2, will bring heavy rains over Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The meteorological department has issued a red alert for the southern areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in view of the looming storm and said these areas are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rains. A well-marked low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression. “It is very likely that it will escalate further into a deep depression over the next 24 hours. It is also likely to intensify further in a cyclonic storm. It is very likely that it will move to the west-northwest and cross the coast of Sri Lanka around the afternoon of December 2, ”said IMD.

“It is very likely to move almost west thereafter and emerge into the Comorin area on the morning of December 3,” IMD’s Cyclone Warning Division said.

Rough weather with wind speed would gradually increase to 55-65 km / h with gusts of 75 km / h in the southeast and along the southwest of the Bay of Bengal from the night of December 1 and 70-80 km / h with gusts of 90 km / h over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, along and off the Sri Coast of Lanka, the meteorological office said. Winds with a speed of 45-55 km / h with gusts at 65 km / h are likely over the Comorin area, the Gulf of Mannar and the coasts of Tamil Nadu-Kerala from the morning of December 2 during the Next 24 hours.

The sea is expected to become rough due to the weather system and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the southeast and southwest of the Bay of Bengal since the night of December 1 and along and off the east coast. from Sri Lanka, Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and the coasts of Tamil Nadu-Kerala from the morning of December 2 for the next 24 hours. Those at sea are advised to return to shore by November 30, IMD said.

Last week, the “very severe cyclonic storm” Nivar had struck Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Nivar, which made landfall on November 26, brought heavy rains and flooded various parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, but did not cause large-scale damage to life or property.
