Union Interior Minister Amit Shah said today that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had worked hard to revive the economy in recent months and that because of that, he expected India’s GDP to return to positive territory after contracting. for two quarters in a row.
“As prime minister, Narendrabhai used the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic to visualize policy making, taking into account its long-term impact on the economy,” Shah said, according to a PTI report.
“As a result, in terms of the recent GDP figure, we are only six percent behind … and I expect that in the next quarter, GDP will be positive,” Shah said.
He spoke after virtually opening two highway bridges in Ahmedabad.
India’s GDP had contracted by a record 23.9 percent in the April-June quarter of the 2020-21 fiscal year as the coronavirus lockdown dragged down economic activity. In the July-September quarter, however, the economy recovered faster than expected: a rebound in manufacturing ensured that GDP contracted just 7.5 percent, recently released official data shows.
The Union Interior Minister listed several measures taken by the government today, especially at the initiative of Prime Minister Modi, PTI reported.
Without wasting a second, Shah said, the Prime Minister had worked on reforms in many areas, such as the agricultural sector, electricity and industrial policy, to create a system to keep pace with development. He also cited the rupee package of 20 million rupees offered by the government for the welfare of the poor and boosting the economy.
