Pune:
PNC leader and member of parliament Supriya Sule said on Saturday that “even if one goes around the world, the vaccine for COVID-19 will be found only in Pune.” He made the comment in apparent reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Serum Institute of India (SII).
Prime Minister Modi visited the SII facility near Pune to review the development and manufacture of the coronavirus vaccine.
Speaking at a campaign meeting for the Legislative Council Pune Graduate Constituency Election in Talegaon Dabhade, Ms Sule said: “He (Modi) is in Pune today. See, after doing rounds around the world, the vaccine against COVID-19 would be found in Pune. Nothing is beyond Pune, “said the deputy from Baramati.
“In the end it was Punekar who invented the vaccine. Otherwise, someone will say that he invented it,” he joked.
Pune-based SII has signed an agreement to manufacture the vaccine developed by the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford in collaboration with the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.
