In a forceful pleading presented by the UAPA accused Umar Khalid’s lawyers, they argued that the selective citation of the supplementary charge sheet of ‘conspiracy’ leaked to the press, when they themselves do not yet have a copy of the charge sheet, it is leading to a media trial aimed at “damaging the reputation of Umar Khalid and destroying the presumption of innocence to which he is entitled.”
A day after the request was moved, Karkardooma court judge Amitabh Rawat ordered that an electronic copy of the charge sheet be provided to his lawyers on November 28.
At the previous hearing on November 24, the court had said that the defendants would only receive a copy of the supplemental charge sheet on December 2. Meanwhile, various outlets reported the allegations against Khalid on this charge sheet. Lawyers for Khalid, Trideep Pais, Sanya Kumar and Rakshanda Deka pointed out why this is problematic, while “the prosecutor denied any accusations and insinuations against the investigating agency.”
