Facing water cannons, tear gas and winter cold, as thousands of farmers moved to the national capital as part of their “Dilli Chalo” protest against the Center’s new agricultural laws, a dhaba along the road came forward to help them.
The famous Amrik Sukhdev dhaba in Murthal of Haryana opened his doors to protesting farmers and prayed a langar sewa for three days. The kind gesture won many hearts on social media and people praised dhaba owners and management for helping protesting farmers.
Video of farmers eating at the famous food restaurant is being widely shared online. It got a lot of attention online after the Youth Wing of the National Congress of India shared a clip of the dhaba located on the Ambala-Delhi national highway on their social media.
A spokesman for the dhaba said it was nothing out of the ordinary and was part of the Sikh faith they believe in. “In the Sikh community we believe in sewa more than anything else, so when we saw so many people stranded, it was okay for us to offer them food. It was more to feed everyone, that attitude that made us do it, ”he said. IndianExpress.com by phone.
When asked whether they would continue with langar, the spokesperson added: “Whenever there is such a need, we will continue to open our doors to them.”
Refusing to comment on the number of people the dhaba fed on Friday, he added: “When we make sewa, we do not count the number of dishes served because it is unnecessary. It’s about serving God by feeding people and, ultimately, humanity. “
Amrik Sukhdev was not the only one who organized a langar for farmers. Khalsa Aid India volunteers also offered free food to protesting farmers along the road near the border.

After a heavy deployment of forces across the borders, Delhi Police allowed farmers to enter the capital for their “peaceful protest” and were escorted by police personnel to Nirankari Ground in North Delhi. However, they refused to go there and asked the government to change the location of the protest to Jantar Mantar. BKU Ugrahan, Punjab’s largest farmers union, said that they will not go to Nirankari Park in Burari, but will instead sit on the outskirts of Delhi until permission to protest in Jantar Mantar is granted.
The permit was granted by the Delhi Police after several rounds of discussion with farmer leaders and also after the AAP-governed Delhi government rejected their request to allow them to use nine stadiums as temporary prisons to detain farmers.
Sending conciliatory signals to farmers protesting for the second time in as many days, the Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar invited them to speak on December 3. Farmers want the Center to withdraw the three laws or guarantee them the minimum support price (MSP) for their crops by introducing a new law.
