Tribal activist Stan Swamy’s painful wait for a sip can no longer be tolerated, said a prominent disability rights organization that plans to send the incarcerated octogenarian with Parkinson’s disease drinking aid.
The 83-year-old man was arrested at his Ranchi residence on October 8 for his alleged involvement in the Elgar Parishad case and is being held at Taloja Jail in Mumbai.
The reaction from the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) came after a special court in Mumbai again rejected Swamy’s request for a straw and straw, and sought a response from the National Investigative Agency (NIA). ) your request.
The court will hear the matter on December 4.
The agency had asked earlier this month for 20 days to respond to the activist’s request for a straw and a sip, and had said it did not take these items from Swamy during his arrest, the activist claimed.
“The painful wait that Swamy will have to endure for a sip can no longer be tolerated. Seven days until December 4, when the same court decides again. Stan cannot be denied fluids for such a long period. Therefore, the NPRD and its affiliated units have decided to send sippers to the jailor at Taloja Jail, Maharashtra, to hand them over to Stan Swamy, ”the NPRD said in a statement.
He also appealed to all disability rights organizations, activists and all those who seek justice for the activist and defend his rights to join this campaign and send sippers to Swamy.
“It took 20 long days for the NIA to file a claim that they did not seize these items from Stan’s possession. Even if we accept the NIA’s argument, the special court should have taken a humane point of view and ordered that you be provided with a utensil to help you drink fluids, including water. The refusal to do so is egregious to say the least, ”the NPRD said.
Swamy is a person living with Parkinson’s disease, which is a condition recognized as disabling under the Persons with Disabilities Rights Act of 2016, she said and expressed her outrage at the continued denial of a sip and a straw to the activist.
The NPRD said that “according to various international laws and conventions to which India is a signatory, it is mandatory that Stan Swamy receive age and disability appropriate requirements, assistive aids including straws and sips, as well as assistance for humane care. “
“Denying them constitutes a violation of their basic rights,” he said.
Swamy, was arrested for his alleged role in inciting mafia violence in Koregaon Bhima near Pune in Maharashtra on January 1, 2018.
