The Supreme Court extends the probation of the condemned person in the case of Rajiv Gandhi, AG Perarivalan, by one week


On Friday, the Supreme Court extended by a week the probation granted to AG Perarivalan, convicted in the case of the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, and made it clear that no further extension will be granted.

A three-judge tribunal headed by Judge LN Rao granted the convict parole on November 23. The court also ordered the state to escort Perarivalan, who requested the extension for medical reasons.

Perarivalan is serving a life sentence at Puzhal Central Prison near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The higher court said that in view of the submissions by lead attorney Gopal Shankarnarayanan, who appeared on behalf of petitioner and attorney Balaji Srinivasan, representing Tamil Nadu, Perarivalan’s probation is extended by one week from Friday.

Perarivalan was granted parole for the first time from November 9 to 23 by the Madras High Court for medical reasons, which was extended by the high court.
