Protesting farmers allowed in Delhi, spot identified for peaceful demonstration

Protesting farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh entered Delhi across the Tikri border on Friday after the national capital’s police commissioner SN Shrivastava said they would be allowed to enter. He called on farmers agitating against the three agricultural laws to maintain order and demonstrate peacefully, according to the ANI news agency. “They will be allowed to protest at Nirankari Samagam Ground in the Burari area,” Shrivastava said.

The bodies of the Punjab farmers also said the Center allowed them to enter Delhi with permission to keep up their agitation on the Burari field, according to PTI. “We have been allowed a safe passage to Delhi,” said Krantikari Kisan Union President Darshan Pal.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) President Balbir Singh Rajewal said farmers were heading to the Burari field after the Delhi police rejected their demand that they be allowed to hold their protest on the Ramlila field.

Punjab’s Chief Minister Amarinder Singh welcomed the decision, saying the government should start talks immediately to address farmers’ problems. “I welcome the Center’s decision to allow farmers to enter Delhi to exercise their democratic right to protest. Now they should also start immediate talks to address farmers’ concerns about farm laws and solve the problem that is latent, ”he said.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are on their way to Delhi as part of their ‘Chalo Dilli’ agitation against the three controversial farm laws passed by the Center in September. The three laws, which farmers say would make them vulnerable to exploitation by large corporations, are: the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020, the Farmers Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act 2020 and the Essential Products (Amendment) Act 2020.
