The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that a low pressure area may form around November 29. Weather trackers said there is a chance it will intensify into a cyclonic storm before hitting the TN coast. Then by December 11, there may be another system forming and moving into the state.
On Thursday, IMD said a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southern Bay of Bengal around November 29. It is likely to become more marked and move west into southern Tamil Nadu. N Puviarasan, director of the Area Cyclone Warning Center, IMD said they are closely monitoring the development and it was too early to predict how the system could evolve.
However, experts said the system may develop, albeit weak, and could cross the delta region and bring widespread rains to coastal areas, including Chennai, on December 1-2. The system can be weak due to conditions such as a cold sea surface after the upwelling caused by Cyclone Nivar and a weak Madden-Julian oscillation, a disturbance of clouds, rain, winds and pressure moving eastward traveling to throughout the tropics, they are not favorable for intensification over the sea.
Long dry spells may also not be ahead of the weather system’s next active rounds of rain, as IMD has forecast light rains over the city for the next 24 hours.
Weather blogger Pradeep John said that global weather shows that another system can form around December 8 or 11 and bring rain, but too early to assess how the system may evolve. “Nungambakkam has logged almost 839mm against an average of 857mm for the northeast monsoon season. We now also have two other systems that can bring rain to Chennai, as well as several other districts of Tamil Nadu. There is no doubt that we will finish with this monsoon season with great excess, “he said.
