New Delhi:
A curfew in Delhi is under “active consideration” depending on the situation, the Delhi government told the High Court today amid a huge wave of coronavirus that the city has been unable to rid itself of in a month. The government’s response came after the court questioned it about the measures being taken to control the increase in daily cases, which had mostly remained above 6,000 during the last week.
The court had asked whether the government plans to impose night curfews or weekend curfews, similar to other cities in the country that are seeing a similar increase.
Yesterday, the Union Ministry of the Interior issued new guidelines for states to contain the contagion, especially within containment zones, as of December 1. However, the final decision was left to the states, many of which have witnessed a further increase in numbers.
Of these, Delhi has contributed the largest number of daily figures. The surge in the national capital had started in late October and reached record levels this month. On November 11, the city saw 8,593 new cases, an all-time high.
Citing the coronavirus situation, Delhi has denied permission for a demonstration by farmers protesting against the Center’s new agricultural laws. The hearing was held while the farmers were fighting with the Haryana police to get to the city.
