New Delhi:
Dramatic images of farmers protesting on the Delhi-Haryana border show thousands of farmers carrying sticks and swords and barricading a river as they tried to break through for a protest march in Delhi. Tear gas projectiles and water cannons were used to drive back the farmers, who withdrew temporarily but returned in greater numbers to confront the police.
Farmers were also seen throwing stones at a bridge where protesters clashed with police. The protesters refused to back down from the bridge that would take them to Haryana on the way to the capital.
Farmers in six states (Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Punjab) have been planning protests for two months, after the center passed three laws aimed at introducing reforms and improving farmers’ profits by allowing them to sell. its products in the commercial market, anywhere in the country.
Haryana, to prevent farmers from continuing, had sealed the borders with Punjab yesterday by order of Prime Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Barricades, water cannons and riot control vehicles were kept ready to drive the protesters back. There are prohibition orders in the state that prohibit large gatherings.
Last night, Haryana police used water cannons at least twice, in freezing cold, to disperse protesting farmers and prevent them from going to Delhi. But that couldn’t stop the protesters, who kept going.
