Bhopal:
A young doctor succumbed to COVID-19 today after battling the virus for nearly a month in Madhya Pradesh. The virus severely affected Dr. Shubham Upadhyay’s lungs and a transplant was the only way to save him. However, he was unable to be flown to Chennai for the procedure due to Cyclone Nivar, which is expected to hit the southeast coast at midnight or early tomorrow.
The 30-year-old, a contract physician at Bundelkhand Medical College, tested positive on October 28 while treating patients with Covid. He was rushed to Chirayu Medical College in Bhopal after his condition worsened on 10 November.
“96 percent of his lungs became infected due to the virus upon admission and a lung transplant was the only way to save him,” said Dr. Ajay Goenka of Chirayu Hospital. But the transplant was delayed because the crown warrior could not be airlifted before the cyclone hit Chennai.
Earlier, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered officials to sanction the amount required for Dr. Upadhyay’s treatment after being briefed on the condition of the crown warrior by PWD state minister Gopal Bhargava.
Madhya Pradesh reported 1,766 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the infection count to 1,96,511, while 11 deaths brought the count to 3,183, health officials said.
