CHENNAI: PWD officials said they would release Water from Chembarambakkam Reservoir at the rate of 1000 cusecs as of noon today, as Chennai and the surrounding areas received heavy rains since Tuesday night due to cyclone Nivar.
The water level is expected to reach 22 feet around noon. The state government directed the PWD to release water once the level reaches 22 feet. The total capacity of the reservoir is 24 feet.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has sent Assistant Engineers and Assistant Executive Engineers to the slums on the banks of the Adyar River. Water from Chembarambakkam Lake will be released into the Adyar River. Alandur and Valasaravakkam are the two areas under surveillance.
Around 150 people will be relocated from Saidapet to aid centers. Around 30 people will be relocated from a slum in Kotturpuram.
Up to 77 relief centers have been kept ready. More than 300 people have been transferred to these centers. The areas under surveillance are Teynampet, Adyar, Kodambakkam.
The Kancheepuram district administration evacuated 125 families in Vazhuthalamedu village. They would be housed in a panchayat elementary school. The Chengalpet district administration called on residents of the Pozhichalur, Cowl Bazaar, Thiruneermalai and Mudichur areas to be cautious, as the water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir will be discharged shortly.
