SC suspends for two weeks Arnab Goswami’s petition against notice of privilege


On Tuesday, the Supreme Court suspended the hearing for two weeks on Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami’s statement against the notice of privilege issued by the Maharashtra Assembly Clerk for his strong remarks against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray .

A bench of three high court judges, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde, postponed the hearing for two weeks.

Previously, the Supreme Court had issued a good cause notice to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Secretary asking why contempt proceedings should not be brought against him for a letter to Arnab Goswami regarding the notice of privilege issued against him.

The high court was hearing a guilty plea by Arnab Goswami challenging a violation of privilege motion filed against him in the Maharashtra Assembly for criticizing Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

During a previous hearing, Salve had argued that there could be a violation of the privilege only if there is some obstacle, obstruction or interference of a person in the performance of the functions or the operation of the House.

Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik filed a motion for violation of privileges against Goswami on September 16 for allegedly using derogatory language against Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party Chairman Sharad Pawar for their alleged inaction. in the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. MLA Manisha Koyande presented a similar motion in the Legislative Council.
