South Bangalore MP Tejasvi Surya faced backlash on Twitter on Monday night after referring to Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar about his trip to the city ahead of the upcoming GHMC elections. “Dear young people of Bhagyanagar,” he wrote at the beginning of his tweet. He also shared a poster when he named his campaign ‘Change Hyderabad’.
He later posted several tweets about his campaign in the city under the hashtag ‘Change Hyderabad’. However, his idea of renaming the city didn’t go well with many people on Twitter and it hit him. Hashtag asking Surya to come back started trending on Twitter.
Dear young people of Bhagyanagar, Please join us in great numbers at the launch of the ‘Change Hyderabad’ program tomorrow at 11am at Swami Vivekananda Institute of Technology. I also look forward to participating with you in Qutbullapur, Jubilee Hills and Madhpur-Lingampally in Hyderabad. pic.twitter.com/advsVvdfHj

#ItIsHyderabadNotBhagyanagar started to trend in opposition to the tweet of the BJP MP. The local body elections in Hyderabad have turned into an intense battle by the BJP with the Union Minister of State G Kishen Reddy, the Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, in addition to Surya and several others who are expected to participate. in the campaign.
This is not the first time that a BJP leader has raised the idea of renaming the city in Telangana. In 2018, Yogi Adityanath also spoke about Hyderabad’s name change to ‘Bhagyanagar’ during the Assembly election campaign there. BJP leader Raja Singh had also said the city would change its name if the saffron party wins the polls there.
“Our goal is that when our Bharatiya Janata Party government comes to power in Telangana, our first (priority) is development, the second is that these names should be changed. They should bear the names of great people, those who worked for our nation, righteousness, and “Telangana,” Singh had said.
