Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that he spoke with top ministers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and secured all possible support from the Center in light of severe cyclonic storm Nivar.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: “I spoke with Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami and Puducherry CM V. Narayanasamy about the situation in the wake of #CycloneNivar. Ensured all possible support from the Center. I pray for the safety and well-being of those who live in the affected areas. “
On Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Nivar has escalated into a cyclonic storm and is very likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry overnight on Wednesday.
“The deep depression has intensified into a cyclonic storm – NIVAR over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal – (Cyclone warning for the shores of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry – Yellow message),” IMD tweeted.

According to the ANI news agency, the rains in both states are expected to start from Tuesday and continue through Thursday. Extremely heavy rains are expected in the coastal and northern delta districts.
Tamil Nadu Prime Minister K Palaniswami held a review meeting and urged his cabinet members and officials to remain fully vigilant and take necessary action. The prime minister announced the suspension of interdistrict and intradistrict bus services in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Villupuram and other districts from 1pm this afternoon until further orders.

On the other hand, Puducherry Prime Minister V Narayanasamy said that the administration has drawn a multiplicity to deal with the cyclonic storm.
The government is working to establish 80 relief centers, relief centers, control rooms in all departments and rehabilitation of people in low-lying areas. All stores were asked to close Tuesday night, Narayanasamy said, adding that fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea.
