A day laborer strangled his 28-year-old wife to death while their three children slept in the same room in Shalimar Bagh, northwest of Delhi, on Saturday morning, police said.
During initial questioning, the suspect Ramakant said he was angry at his wife for being too involved with her side of the family and “neglecting their three children,” said Vijayanta Arya, deputy police commissioner (Northwest).
The victim also worked as a day laborer and there were frequent discussions between the couple about who was running the family, DCP said.
The woman, Soni, lived with Ramakant and their three children, ages three to seven, in a rented room in Singhalpur village in Shalimar Bagh. The murder occurred in the early hours of Saturday while the three children slept in the room, DCP said.
Ramakant allegedly ran away from the house even as the children were still sleeping. “Around 6 am on Saturday morning, we received a call from Soni’s sister who lives in the same neighborhood and had knocked on the door to check on the family. When she noticed that her sister was not responding and that her husband had disappeared, she began to cry, ”said DCP.
Since Ramakant was missing, he became the prime suspect.
“We were following his trail and suspected that he would go to his native home in the Jalaun district of UP. We raided his house on Sunday and arrested him. He has confessed to the crime, ”said DCP.
