Assam’s former chief minister and congressional leader, Tarun Gogoi, died on Monday. He suffered from multi-organ dysfunction.
Gogoi, the three-time prime minister of Assam, had a political career of more than 50 years in which he assumed various positions within the Congress party, the central government and the state administration of Assam.
Born on April 1, 1936 to an ethnic Assamese Tai-Ahom family in Rangajan Tea Estate located in the former Sivasagar district, now Jorhat district of Assam. His father, Dr. Kamaleshwar Gogoi, was a doctor at the plantation of tea while her mother, Usha Gogoi, was known for her collection of poetry –– Hiyar Samahar.

Gogoi did his primary education at No. 26 Rangajan Nimna Buniyadi Vidyalaya before moving to Jorhat Madrassa School, Bholaguri High School located near Badulipar Tea Estate and finally Jorhat Government High School, from where she passed the HSLC exam. Completing his graduation from Jagannath Barooah College, he did his LLB from Gauhati University, Assam.
With his first term as a Member of Parliament starting in 1971, he went on to be elected to the Lok Sabha a total of six times. He also served as Deputy Secretary of the All India Congressional Committee in 1976 and Chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congressional Committee from 1986 to 1991.
During Narasimha Rao’s tenure (1991-1995) as Prime Minister, Gogoi served in the Union cabinet as Minister of State (Independent charge) Ministry of Food and Food Processing Industry.

Gogoi led Congress to a record three consecutive election victories in Assam in 2001, 2006 and 2011, and served as the state’s prime minister for 15 years (2001-2016), thus becoming the state’s longest-serving prime minister. service.
In the 2016 Assembly elections in Assam, although the BJP together with its allies defeated the Congressional government, Gogoi managed to win in the Assembly constituency of Titabar.
In August of this year, Gogoi was admitted to the hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 and was discharged after recovering. However, he was again rushed to GMCH on November 2 with post-COVID complications and he was on non-invasive ventilation (NIV). They put him on invasive ventilation Saturday night as his deteriorated condition.
