Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who had been fighting for his life with post-Covid complications in a hospital for weeks, died of multiple organ failure, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his death and said he was a “popular leader and a veteran administrator”.

President Ram Nath Kovind said Gogoi will be remembered for developing Assam.
“It is very sad to hear of the passing of Shri Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam. The country has lost a veteran leader with rich political and administrative experience. His long tenure in office was a period of epochal change in Assam.” he tweeted. .
He will always be remembered for the development of Assam and especially for his efforts to improve law and order and combat insurgency in the state. His passing marks the end of an era. In this hour of pain, my condolences to his family, friends and supporters.

The chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, who had returned from an official tour on Gogoi’s health, described him as a leader of the people.
“Tarun Gogoi was a people’s leader who made a great contribution to the political and public sphere of Assam. Even though we were in the opposition parties, we shared a wonderful relationship and he was a guiding figure. My condolences to his family and supporters. ” tweeted.

Gogoi, a stalwart of Congress in the state, tested positive for the coronavirus on August 25 and was admitted to the Gauhati Hospital and College of Medicine the next day. He had recovered from COVID-19 and was released from the hospital after two months.
But he had to be readmitted on November 2, due to post-Covid complications, and was given non-invasive ventilation until his condition deteriorated on Saturday.
By Sunday, Mr. Gogoi’s health had improved slightly, but his urine output remained a cause for concern. Today, Sarma, while giving an update on his health, had said that he was “extremely critical.”
