The center briefed the court on measures taken by Union Interior Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to control coronavirus cases. “Delhi has to respond to many things,” he said, passing the buck to the Arvind Kejriwal government.

Delhi has been struggling to contain the surge in coronavirus cases that have exceeded 5.29 lakh, making it the sixth most affected state.

The Gujarat government was also criticized by the high court. “The situation in Gujarat is next to Delhi. Worse situation. What measures have been taken? What is happening in your state? What measures are you taking regarding political events?” the court said.

Gujarat has seen a recent spike in virus cases, forcing the state government to impose a night curfew in cities such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. The Vijay Rupani government also decided not to reopen schools and colleges today.

Maharashtra, meanwhile, remains the state with the highest number of Covid cases. The number of cases has crossed 17.8 lakh with 5,753 new cases on Sunday.

The Supreme Court will take the case on November 27.

India is currently the second worst affected country in the world by the pandemic, with more than 91.39 lakh of Covid cases in total, including more than 1.33 lakh of deaths.
