NEW DELHI: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said security forces had dismantled a plot to disrupt district council elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the government warned Islamabad on Saturday against using terrorists to launch attacks in India and also said it will take all necessary actions against terrorism to safeguard national security.
Unusually, the prime minister tweeted on the Nagrota meeting, holding Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammed responsible. It was a rare occasion when Modi commented on a security operation. India summoned the Pakistani charge d’affaires and expressed “great concern” over the attempted terrorist attack, saying it was only prevented by the state of alert of the Indian forces.
Government sources said that the Nagrota operation was a significant success for the security forces, considering the recovery of a large quantity of weapons and RDX. It was intended to provoke a major terrorist incident and pointed to Pakistan’s efforts to disturb the peace on the Union territory following various actions taken by the Center following the annulment of Article 370.
India reiterated its long-standing demand that Pakistan fulfill its international obligations and bilateral commitments not to allow any territory under its control to be used for terrorism against India in any way.
The Government of India is firmly and resolutely committed to taking all necessary measures to safeguard its national security in the fight against terrorism, ”he said. “The government of India expressed serious concern about the continued terrorist attacks by JeM against India,” the statement said.
The government recalled that JeM had been part of several attacks in India in the past, including the one on Pulwama in 2019 that led to the IAF attack on the jihadist training facilities in Balakot. “The huge cache of weapons, ammunition and explosive material indicates the planning of a major attack to destabilize peace and security … in particular to derail the District Development Council elections,” he said.
