All but one of the 42 residents of Thorang village in Himachal’s Lahaul-Spiti district tested positive for COVID-19, with 2.83% of the population of the sparsely populated tribal district having been infected.
While 41 people tested positive in Thorang village, a total of 890 people from Lahaul-Spiti district, representing about 2.83 percent of its population of around 31,500, have been infected with coronavirus so far, according to showed data from the HP Department of Health. on Friday.
In early October, 39 residents of Rangrik village in the Spiti Valley tested positive for the infection.
Of the 890 people from the Lahaul-Spiti district who have tested positive for Covid so far, 479 have been cured, while 406 are still recovering from the disease.
According to the data, so far five people have succumbed to the virus in the district.
Several residents of the Lahaul-Spiti district generally migrate to the adjoining Kullu district in winter due to the extreme cold, a district official said.
Dr. RC Thakur, director of the Lal Bahadur Shashtri Government Medical College in Mandi and a native of Lahaul district, has attributed the increase in COVID-19 cases in the district to three reasons: a recent religious function in Lahaul, the extreme winter and the arrival of many tourists in the district after the opening of the Atal Tunnel Rohtang.
Dr. Thakur advised people to protect themselves from the cold, keep their distance and hygiene, and wear masks.
Meanwhile, a district health official said they have started special awareness programs to help people protect themselves against infection.
In Himachal Pradesh, a total of 32,239 people have tested positive for Covid to date.
Of these, 25,176 have been cured and the number of active cases is currently around 6,547.
The deadly coronavirus has claimed 484 lives to date in the state, according to Health Department data.
