NEW DELHI: The Punjab farmers protesting against three new agricultural laws have decided to lift their rail blockade from 23 November.
The farmers’ unions said they will lift the blockade for 15 days during which the central government should hold talks, adding that the protests will resume if the government does not solve the problem.
“The farmers’ unions have announced that they will allow the resumption of all trains from the day after tomorrow for 15 days during which the central government should start talks. If the talks are not held within 15 days, the agitation will resume.” authorities said in a statement.
The decision to allow passenger trains in the state came after a meeting of representatives of peasant leaders with Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh.
Welcoming the farmers’ decision to end the rail blockade for 15 days, Amarinder Singh said the move will restore normalcy to our economy.
“I had a fruitful meeting with the Kisan unions. Happy to share that as of the evening of November, the Kisan unions have decided to end the rail blockades for 15 days. I welcome this step as it will restore normalcy in our economy. I urge the central government to resume rail services to Punjab immediately, “Amarinder said in a tweet.

Earlier this week, agricultural agencies had said they would allow passenger trains to run in Punjab if the government starts operating freight trains first. However, the Railways had refused to restart freight trains, saying they would operate freight and passenger trains or neither.
Farmers protest against the new agricultural marketing laws enacted in the Center, claiming that they would lead to the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system.
