Virat Kohli India’s team drops to No. 2 as ICC implements new points formula

ICC World Trials Championship: The two finalists of the ongoing inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) will now be decided by the ‘Percentage of Points Earned’. The ICC cricket committee headed by Anil Kumble has chosen this option for the first edition of an interrupted WTC. The ICC Board has approved the recommendations made by the cricket committee.

The new points formula has dropped the Indian team to No. 2 in the points table behind Australia.

ICC Executive Director Manu Sawhney said: “Both the Cricket Committee and the Chief Executive Committee support the approach of ranking teams based on matches completed and points earned, as this reflects their performance and does not detract from teams that have not been able to complete all of their matches. for reasons beyond their control “

Under the original WTC format, the top nine teams were scheduled to play six series over two years and the top two would reach the final at Lord’s.

However, some of the competing games were postponed or canceled due to the pandemic and initially, there were reports suggesting that the ICC was planning to split points for those games, but the idea is now believed to have been squashed, with the method the ‘percentage of points earned’ takes precedence.

There was also a proposal among the ICC members to modify the calendar and have two semi-finals and one final, but it was rejected.
