Quota for children of Covid warriors in MBBS, BDS seats


Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan announced on Thursday that the central government has introduced a new category for the children of Covid warriors in the guidelines for the selection and nomination of candidates against the Central Pool Bachelor of Medicine. , Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) positions for the 2020-21 academic year.

This new category will be called ‘Wards of Covid Warriors,’ the minister said in a tweet.

A press release from the ministry said that five central pools will be reserved for this new category.

Vardhan said the move recognizes the need to dignify and honor the contributions of all those who treated and managed coronavirus patients.

The minister recounted the definition of ‘Covid Warrior’ as set out by the Government of India when announcing the Rs 50 lakhs insurance package for them. Covid warriors are all public healthcare providers, including community health workers, who may have to be in direct contact with and care for Covid-19 patients and who may be at risk of being affected by this. Private and retired hospital staff / volunteers / local urban agencies / contracted / daily salary / ad-hoc / subcontracted staff requested by states / central hospitals / autonomous hospitals of the center / states / UT, AIIMS and institutes of national importance (INI) / Central Ministries hospitals drafted for Covid-19 related responsibilities are included, as defined by the government.

As for the states and territories of the union, Vardhan added that their respective governments will certify eligibility for this category.

The selection of candidates will be made by the Medical Council Committee (MCC) through the online application based on the rank obtained in NEET-2020 made by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 89.58 lakh with 45,576 fresh infections, while the number of recoveries has risen to over 83.83 lakh, bringing the national recovery rate to 93.58 %, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
