A parliamentary committee questioned Twitter on Thursday over recent “obscene” tweets by comedian Kunal Kamra to the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of India (CJI), and requested a response from the social media giant on the matter on seven days. said panel chair Meenakshi Lekhi. This came on the heels of Twitter apologizing in writing to the same parliamentary panel for incorrectly portraying Ladakh in China and promising to correct the mistake by the end of the month.
Representatives of Twitter India were testified before Parliament’s Joint Committee on the data protection bill on Thursday. “It is shameful that Twitter is allowing its platform for obscene comments like that of comedian Kunal Kamra against the Supreme Court and the CJI,” Lekhi told reporters here.
“Twitter allows its platform to be misused to abuse the main constitutional authorities, such as the Supreme Court and the CJI.” She said that committee members from across the political spectrum, including Congressional MP Vivek Tankha, BSP MP Ritesh Pandey and BJD MP Bhatruhari Mahtab, questioned Twitter representatives on this issue. Lekhi also said that Twitter’s explanation of the ban on identifiers and tweets was found to be inadequate.
Meanwhile, Kamra has refused to retract his controversial tweets against the Supreme Court or to apologize for them, saying he believes they “speak for themselves.” Earlier, Attorney General KK Venugopal consented to the initiation of criminal contempt proceedings against him for a series of tweets after the Supreme Court issued provisional bail to Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami.
