The deep cuts in shares of Coal India (down 4.41%), SBI (down 4.40%), ICICI Bank (down 3.61%), JSW Steel (down 3.24%) and UltraTech Cement (3.15% decline) dragged down the NSE Nifty index on Thursday as the 50-pack plunged 142.2 points to trade at 12,796.05 as of 02:27 PM (IST).
Overall, 16 of the index components traded at a profit, while 34 lost weight.
Peer Sensex dropped 497.79 points to 43,682.26 around the same time. On the other hand, the broader BSE Midcap index traded 114.06 points at 16,229.79.
Vodafone Idea, YES Bank, Tata Motors, BHEL and SBI were among the most traded securities on NSE (in terms of volume) during the session so far, while in terms of value, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, RIL, IndusInd Bank and SBI were among the top of the table.
Meanwhile, shares in Tata Chemicals, Tanla Solutions, Tata Steel (PP), Titan Company and Navin Fluorine have all scaled their new 52-week highs so far. On the other hand, Jump Networks, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Sumit Woods and Vishal Fabrics all reached their new 52-week lows.
The industry landscape told a story. BSE Bankex, which represents the segment that has the most weight in the index, was down 2.49 percent, while the TI index, another important component, was down 0.57 percent. The auto index was down 0.48 percent.
Among others, the capital goods index fell 1.11 percent, the real estate index fell 0.88 percent, the oil and gas index rose 0.13 percent, the durable goods index rose one percent, the consumer goods index was up 0.69 percent, the metals index was down 1.11 percent and the telecommunications index was down 1.01 percent.
