‘Great daughter of our country’: Rahul Gandhi, Congress remembers Indira Gandhi on the anniversary of her birth

Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Thursday on her 103rd birthday. On Twitter, Gandhi remembered her as an “efficient prime minister” and as someone who was a “form of power.”

“I pay my tribute on the anniversary of Smt’s birth. Indira Gandhi, an efficient Prime Minister and form of power. While the entire nation, even today, speaks of her impressive leadership, I always remember her as my beloved grandmother. The things she taught me inspire me every day, ”the former president of Congress tweeted and also posted a photo of his grandmother.

Gandhi also visited Shakti Sthal, the monument to Indira Gandhi in the national capital, to pay tribute to her.

The Congress party remembered Indira Gandhi as a “pioneer, visionary, true leader and great daughter of India”. “A pioneer, a visionary, a true leader and a great daughter of our country, Smt. Indira Gandhi was much more than a prime minister to our citizens; she was the revitalizing force in his quest for greatness and prosperity. Today, we pay a proud tribute to Indira from India ”, the party tweeted.

Born on November 19, 1917, Indira Gandhi was the daughter of the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, and one of the three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family who held that position, being the father of Rahul Gandhi and the eldest son by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, the third. She is also the first and only female PM from India so far.

Indira Gandhi was the third prime minister of India and the second oldest after her father. He also held other important portfolios such as defense, finance, interior and foreign affairs. It is also remembered for India’s decisive victory over Pakistan in 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh, as well as the nearly 24-month emergency imposed by it in 1975.

She was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984 for sending the Indian army into the Golden Temple in Amritsar earlier that year to take it away from Sikh separatists. His assassination sparked anti-Sikh riots across India.
