Vijayanagara, which is to be divided into Ballari district, will become Karnataka’s 31st district following cabinet approval on Wednesday.
Prime Minister BS Yediyurappa had announced last year that he will soon present to the cabinet a proposal for approval of the creation of the Vijayanagara district, which is named after the capital of the historic Vijayanagara Empire.
The CM had further said that Hospete, Kampli, Hagaribommanahalli, Kottur, Hadagali and Harapanahalli will form the new Vijayanagara district with Hospete as the district headquarters. The Ballari, Kurugodu, Siraguppa, Sandur and Kudligi taluks will remain part of the Ballari district, with the city of Ballari as the seat.
Yediyurappa, in a note to the media, said in 2019 that Ballari has become difficult to manage as it has 11 taluks and 11 income subdivisions. In most cases, farmers, day laborers and poor people have to travel long distances to reach the district headquarters in the city of Ballari. “As a result, it is seen to alleviate problems by creating a separate district for efficient administration,” the note read.
