The Twitter username ‘True Indology’ was suspended after his account holder argued with IPS officer D. Roopa about the ban on firecrackers in many parts of the country during Deepavali. The crux of the discussion, which began during Deepavali on November 14, was whether the firecrackers were Indian or not. The account suspension has caused a stir among right-wing Twitter users who have come out in support of True Indology.
On November 14, Ms Roopa, who is Secretary of the Interior of the Karnataka Government, put a Facebook link on her Twitter account to a post she had written supporting the ban on firecrackers. Citing the impact of popping cookies on people’s health and air pollution levels, as well as its effect on Bengaluru’s green roof, he wrote: “For those who mourn victims of this being done to Hindus, well, cookies were not there during the Vedic Age; cookies are not mentioned in our epics and puranas. Cookies came to this country with the Europeans. It is not a fundamental tradition or custom related to Hinduism. “
His views sparked a torrent of responses from other Twitter users, including True Indology, who took offense at his comments about firecrackers and Hindu customs.
