Coronavirus Cases in India: The country has experienced more daily recoveries than infections for 45 days.

New Delhi:
India recorded 29,164 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, less than 30,000 in a day for the first time in more than four months, government data on coronavirus shows. With this, the total count of Covid cases in the country since the January outbreak is 88,74,291. In the period of one day, 449 people lost their lives to COVID-19, bringing the total deaths to 1,30,519.

Here’s your 10-point cheat sheet for this great story:

  1. The daily case count has dropped to less than 30,000 for the first time since July 15, when India recorded 29,429 new infections. The country’s Covid chart rose steadily thereafter to more than 90,000 cases per day in mid-September, the peak of India’s first coronavirus wave, which has been steadily declining since October.

  2. India has also seen more daily recoveries than cases for 45 consecutive days, reducing its number of active cases to 4.53 lakh; 40,791 patients successfully battled viral disease in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate has improved to 93.4%. The total number of recovered cases amounts to 82.90,371.

  3. Although the country has already passed the first peak, the central and state governments anticipate another, possibly more severe increase in the coming winter months when respiratory infections increase. Many states in the north of the country have reported a steady increase in COVID-19 infections.

  4. Delhi remains the hardest hit among these states, recording 99 deaths and 3,797 cases, nearly half of its last week average of 7,000, as testing was halved to 30,000 despite orders to increase it to almost 1 lakh per day with more RT-PCR tests.

  5. Amid the worrying situation, the Delhi government has maintained that the state would not see another “lockdown” and maintained that the third wave of infections in the city has ended and that cases will begin to decline soon.

  6. Five states of Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan account for nearly 49 percent of all cases in the country. After Delhi, the remaining states recorded between 3,000 and 2,100 cases in one day.

  7. Almost 58 percent of all Covid-related deaths were recorded in Delhi, Maharashtra (60), West Bengal (53), Chhattisgarh (26), and Punjab (22).

  8. Globally, the US remains the worst affected country with more than 1.1 million Covid cases and 2.5 million related deaths, followed by India, Brazil and France. The United States and many European countries are experiencing a new and stronger spike than the one in spring, causing the world to eagerly watch a vaccine even as China and Russia have begun immunizing their populations.

  9. Moderna Inc’s vaccine, with an efficacy of 94.5 percent, is the last among the various contenders. Stable at refrigerator temperature for 30 days, unlike others that require sub-zero storage.

  10. Bharat Biotech from India has announced the commencement of COVAXIN phase 3 trials. This is India’s first phase 3 efficacy study for a COVID-19 vaccine and the largest phase 3 efficacy trial ever conducted in India with 26,000 volunteers.
