Guwahati:
The Assam police have arrested two brothers, who were taken to the police station by locals on suspicion of trying to sacrifice their own children in search of hidden treasure.
In the absence of eyewitnesses or a complaint from villagers in the Sivasagar district, in upper Assam, the police have launched their own investigation into the allegations denied by the family. The police have also kept their families, including six children, in “protective custody” for now.
Residents of Dimowmukh village, about 370 km east of Guwahati and 10 km from the Sivasagar district headquarters, recently reported to the police about two brothers, Jamiur Hussain and Sariful Hussain, whom they suspected of treating their own sons on the advice of a charlatan, known locally. like Bez, the police said.
“The locals said that a person identified as Bez de Sonari, about 45 km from Sivasagar, had told the brothers that they would find gold hidden under a mango tree that is in their house if they sacrificed their children,” said a Sivasagar Police Officer.
According to the police, the locals became suspicious when they found six children, three from each brother, confined. They then handed over the two brothers, their wives and the children to the Sivasagar Sadar police station.
“In the absence of a formal complaint and eyewitnesses to back up the human sacrifice allegations, the police have held the family in protective custody. We have initiated our own investigation in light of the allegations,” said Jayanta Sharati Bora, a senior officer of the police. in Sivasagar, he told reporters.
However, the family has denied the allegations. They agreed that they had sought Bez’s advice a month ago, but on how to improve their son’s failing health.
“The family maintains that the villagers had become suspicious of them even since they returned from Sonari a month ago. The police are trying to arrest the healer. This would shed light on the case,” Bora added.
Human sacrifice, especially of children, is not unheard of in Assam.
Last year, a boy was rescued just as his family was about to euthanize him in the Udalgiri district of Assam. In 2013, a man killed his 13-year-old son in what was called a human sacrifice case.
