Union Interior Minister Amit Shah on Monday tweeted his greetings on National Press Day and praised the role of the media during the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “committed” to press freedom, he said on Twitter, adding that it strongly opposes those who try to strangle the media.

Greetings #NationalPressDay. Our media fraternity works tirelessly to strengthen the foundations of our great nation. The Modi government is committed to freedom of the press and strongly opposes those who strangle it. I applaud Media’s remarkable role during Covid-19, ”he tweeted.
National Press Day is celebrated annually on November 16 to mark the day the Press Council of India (PCI) was established in 1966. The day is the symbol of a free and responsible press in India and the PCI it is a moral watchdog that ensures that journalists in the country remain impartial and are not driven by external factors.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu also tweeted his wishes on the occasion, noting that the media played an important role in strengthening democracy.
“My regards to all media professionals on National Press Day. The media play a key role in strengthening democracy and in informing and empowering citizens. I commend the media for keeping people informed continuously during the pandemic, ”he tweeted.
