Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Tests Positive for Coronavirus

N Biren Singh asked everyone who came in contact with him to get tested.

Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh said today that he had tested positive for the new coronavirus. Mr. Singh shared the news on his Twitter account today.

He also asked everyone who came in contact with him to get tested.

“I have tested positive for COVID-19. I request all those who were in close contact with me recently to isolate themselves and get tested,” the 59-year-old BJP leader tweeted.

The prime minister is suffering from home isolation, a health department official told the PTI news agency.

Several union ministers have contracted the virus which has affected more than 88 lakh people in India. Union Interior Minister Amit Shah tested positive and was later cured of COVID-19. Karnataka’s chief minister, BS Yediyurappa, also tested positive for the virus and was hospitalized for a time.

Other ministers who tested positive include Nitin Gadkari, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Ayush Minister Shirpad Naik, Junior Agriculture Minister Kailash Choudhary, Minister of Heavy Industries and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and Minister of Dharmendra Pradhan oil, among others. Several MLAs and MPs across the country also tested positive.

Coronavirus cases in India now stand at 88.14 lakh with an increase of 41,100 cases in the past 24 hours, government data showed today. 447 deaths in the past 24 hours have raised the total death count to 1,29,635.

India has been reporting a steady decline in its daily coronavirus infections after reaching a peak of about 90,000 cases per day in September. The country has the second highest coronavirus infection count in the world after the US.
