The captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli, was trolled on Twitter and criticized by fans for his ‘anti-cracker’ Diwali message. Kohli, who is currently in Australia with the rest of the Indian team, had taken to social media to post a video message for his fans on Diwali. In his video, the Indian captain asked people to avoid popping cookies at the festival of lights to protect the environment and reduce pollution.
However, her message offended many on social media as people reacted furiously to Kohli’s message. A video has also gone viral on Twitter showing cookies exploding during Kohli’s birthday celebrations with his fellow Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Dubai earlier this month. Kohli was accompanied by his wife Anushka Sharma for the celebrations.
In the video, shared by RCB’s official identifier, the cookies can be seen popping in the background just before Kohli and Anushka cut the cake together. The video has been widely shared on Twitter with fans calling Kohli a ‘hypocrite’ for not practicing what he has been preaching. Kohli was also targeted by many for an incident in June last year when the Guruguram Municipal Corporation fined Kohli for using potable water to wash cars.
Some also pointed out how crackers have always been a part of IPL and other cricket tournaments where they are used a lot after a final. Some trolls also attacked Kohli’s wife, Anushka, for her message.
