Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the death of Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee on Sunday, saying it was a colossal loss for the film world.
“The death of Shri Soumitra Chatterjee is a colossal loss for the world of cinema, the cultural life of West Bengal and India. Through his works, he came to embody Bengali sensibilities, emotions and values. Anguished by his passing. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti, ”the prime minister tweeted.
In a tweet, President Ram Nath Kovind said that Chatterjee will be remembered for the ‘Apu’ trilogy and other memorable performances in Satyajit Ray’s masterpieces.
“With the passing of Soumitra Chatterjee, Indian cinema has lost one of its legends. He will be especially remembered for the ‘Apu’ trilogy and other memorable performances in Satyajit Ray’s masterpieces. He made an immense contribution to the art of acting, ”he said.
The 85-year-old took his last breath at Belle Vue Hospital in Kolkata.
The actor entered the hospital on October 6 after testing positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). He was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when Covid encephalopathy began, which affected his central nervous system and caused kidney dysfunction.
He subsequently recovered from the infection, but his health did not improve, despite various plasma, dialysis and tracheostomy therapies.
“We declare with regret that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed her last at 12:15 pm at the Belle Vue Clinic today (November 15, 2020). We pay our tribute to his soul, ”the hospital said in a statement.
Several actors and directors, who have worked with the award-winning Dada Saheb Phalke, mourned his passing.
In a career spanning six decades, Chatterjee has acted in more than 300 films.
