Former Pakistani sprinter Shoaib Akhtar was widely known for his extreme pace and for what he has been able to horrify hitters on all teams, including many legendary players. He has encountered several outstanding hitters in his cricket career, but his battle with Indian players was always a pleasure to watch.
The ‘Rawalpindi Express’ has played against players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and many more talented Indian hitters, but his matchup with two leading Indian scorers, i.e. Sachin and Dravid was somewhat plus. and recently he was asked to name the toughest hitters between the two in a chat session.
Unlike the expected response, Akhtar went with “The Wall”. He said that Dravid was more challenging to play compared to Sachin.
“Dravid was harder to play than Sachin,” Shoaib said during an interactive session on the Helo app.
In February 1999, Akhtar recorded his name in the hearts of Indian cricket fans when he took out Dravid and Sachin by producing New Yorkers who were not playable at Eden Gardens. He first got Dravid on the 24th and then sent Sachin back to the pavilion for a golden duck.
Iconic Indian player Sachin finished his splendid 24-year career with 18,426 runs in ODI and 15,921 runs in test cricket. Dravid, on the other hand, finished with 13,288 runs in the game’s longest format, and 10,889 runs in ODI. The featured couple racked up a total of 148 international centuries together.
Akhtar also had an excellent career for Pakistan cricket. In 46 Tests, the right point guard claimed 178 scalps with 12 times he won a five wicket course while Akhtar ten times achieved a four wicket course. At ODI, the former pacemaker grabbed 247 wickets in 163 games. For six times, Akhtar bagged a four wicket run in the 50+ format and four times produced a five wicket performance.
