SRINAGAR: Three members of the security forces were among six people killed in multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) from the Gurez sector to the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, authorities said.
They said Pakistani troops fired mortars and other weapons.
In the Nambla sector of Uri, two army soldiers were killed in the Pakistani gunfire, officials said.
A BSF deputy inspector was also killed in the Haji Peer sector, while a jawan was injured, they said.
Two civilians were killed in the Kamalkote sector in the Uri area of Baramulla while a woman was killed in the Balkote area in the Haji Peer sector of Uri, they added.
Officials said several people were injured in the Pakistani assault.
They said that apart from several places in Uri, the ceasefire violations were reported from Izmarg in the Gurez sector of the Bandipora district and the Keran sector of the Kupwara district.
A defense spokesman said the Army thwarted an infiltration attempt, which was aided by the violation of the ceasefire, along the LoC in the Keran sector.
“Our troops observed suspicious movements at outposts along the LoC in the Keran sector (in the Kupwara district of northern Kashmir) today. The alleged infiltration offer was thwarted by troops on alert,” said the Srinagar defense spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia.
“They fired mortars and other weapons. An adequate response is being given,” he said.
In New Delhi, BSF officials said that 39-year-old SI Rakesh Doval, deployed in the force artillery battery at the LoC in Baramulla, died after sustaining a head injury in the shooting at around 1:15 p.m. .
Sheriff Vasu Raja suffered splinter injuries to his arms and cheeks. He was deployed in the same place defended ahead, they said, adding that the bailiff is stable.
Almost all BSF units throughout the LoC have faced heavy gunfire since morning and effective retaliation has been mounted by troops, artillery regiment and supporting weapons, said a senior officer of the force.
The BSF works under the operational command of the Army in the LoC.
“The deputy inspector has made a supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while facing a strong violation of the ceasefire by the enemy. The noncommissioned officer was a resident of Rishikesh in Uttarakhand and joined the border force in 2004,” the officer said. .
Doval is survived by his father, his wife and a nine-year-old daughter, he said.
In Srinagar, Kalia said the violation of the ceasefire spread to larger areas, from the Keran sectors to Uri.
This was the second infiltration attempt in a week. The previous failed bid in the Machil sector during the night of November 7-8 was thwarted in which three militants were killed.
Three army soldiers, including a captain, and a BSF jawan also lost their lives during the operation.
“The Indian military is well prepared to defeat all attempts by Pakistan to infiltrate terrorists into J&K,” the spokesman said.
