Indian cricketer Krunal Pandya was detained and questioned by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Mumbai International Airport on Thursday.

DRI officials said Pandya had not declared four expensive watches. Customs officials familiar with the investigation said the watches cost around 75 lakh rupees. Under the Customs Law, a passenger can carry items worth Rs 50,000 or less as a “franchise” and does not need to declare them to customs. However, if a passenger is carrying an item worth more than Rs 50,000, they must declare themselves at customs in the red channel arrivals area and pay about 36% of the customs duties before leaving the airport.
If a passenger is caught with goods worth Rs 20 lakhs, customs officials impose a fine. But if a passenger is found carrying goods ranging from Rs20 lakh to Rs1 crore, he is fined and also faces arrest. However, in such cases, a passenger may receive a cash deposit against cash deposit. But if the items above Rs1 crore are not declared, the passenger is arrested and brought before a judge to seek judicial custody.
