Attorney General KK Venugopal Grants Consent to Contempt Proceedings Against Comedian Kunal Kamra | India News


NEW DELHI: The Attorney General KK Venugopal today he granted his consent to initiate criminal contempt against the comedian Kunal Kamra for his tweets against him Supreme Court verdict in journalist Arnab Goswami.
The move comes after a Mumbai-based defender on Wednesday requested permission to initiate contempt proceedings against the comedian for his ‘derogatory’ tweets in which he criticized the Supreme Court for granting provisional bail to television journalist Arnab. Goswami in an incitement to the suicide case.
“The tweets that I extract below are not only in bad taste, but they clearly cross the line between humor and contempt for the court,” Venugopal said in his letter to one of the applicants who had requested the consent of the highest judicial official to initiate contempt proceedings against Kamra.
Therefore, I give my consent to proceed by initiating contempt proceedings against Kunal Kamra, ”Venugopal said in his letter.
On Thursday, two Pune lawyers and a law student also requested the consent of the Attorney General to initiate contempt proceedings against the comedian.
A holiday bank headed by Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Indira Banerjee had ordered the release of Arnab Goswami and two other defendants on provisional bail in connection with the 2018 incitement to suicide case. The court also ordered the Police Commissioner to ensure that the order is followed immediately.
